Without a Speaker of the House, Action Comes to a Halt in Congress

US Capitol

Since the ouster of former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) legislative business has come to a halt in the House of Representatives as the Republican caucus struggles to elect a new speaker. This week showed little progress in selecting a new candidate who could garner the votes needed on the House floor to assume the speakership. Without a speaker in the House, that body cannot legislate. Thus, all progress on Fiscal Year 2024 spending and all other legislative action is paused while the House majority continues to iron out a path forward. A candidate who could garner approval by the majority of House Members, as well as a timeline remain unclear.
